EMDR
NAMI of Seneca, Sandusky and Wyandot Counties and CIT Northwest Ohio were awarded a grant from the Ohio Criminal Justice Services that is responsible for bringing EMDR training to over 50 clinicians in our six county region. These clinicians will offer free therapy to over 50 first responders within the next year. After that, our partner clinicians will continue to offer EMDR therapy at a cost that is likely covered by your department's insurance. Along with providing the very important therapy, our clinician partners will also form a mobile crisis unit to meet with first responders immediately following a traumatic event.
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a treatment for people suffering from the symptoms of trauma including PTSD. EMDR has been extensively researched and is an effective, relatively non-verbal type of treatment. Our brains have a way of healing themselves in normal times of distress but sometimes, the level of trauma or chronic trauma render our self-healing ineffective. That's where EMDR comes into play. It is designed to resolve unprocessed traumatic events in our brain. Many times, the negative images associated with the traumatic event(s) are removed or decreased when EMDR therapy is complete. There is extensive research which suggests EMDR is an effective therapy for front-line workers and meets the unique needs of law enforcement.
