CIT was started in Memphis TN, in 1988, after the shooting of a man with serious mental illness by Memphis Police
Memphis PD, the Memphis Chapter of NAMI, The University of Tennessee Medical School, and the University of Memphis collaborated to improve Police training and procedures in response to mental illness.
The "Memphis Model" has been adopted by hundreds of communities in more than 35 states and is being implemented statewide in several States, including Ohio, Maine, Connecticut, Georgia, Florida, and Utah.
CIT was brought to Ohio in 2000 by Lt. Michael Woody of the Akron Police Department and Doctor Mark Munetz of the Northeast Ohio Medical University.
